This is the famous São Bento medal. It is believed to provide protection from physical, spiritual, and evil temptations.
The history of the São Bento medal
St. Benedict often used the sign of the cross. He used it as a form of protection, salvation and affirmation of the life and work of Jesus. One of the facts related is the episode in which a poisoned cup breaks when the sign of the cross is made over it. The sign of the cross was recommended by St. Benedict to all who were experiencing some affliction or evil temptation.
In the 17th century, in Nattenberg, Bavaria, some women accused of witchcraft claimed that they had not succeeded in reaching the Benedictine monastery of Metten. When the fact was investigated, it was found that inside, on the walls, several crosses were marked with some mysterious abbreviations. After a few years and more library research, in the 20th century the mystery was unraveled. It is believed that it was the power of the crosses and initials inscribed on the walls that protected the monastery.
Latin translation on front of medal:
Eius in obitu nostro presentia muniamur. “May at the hour of our death, protect us”.
