The name Baphomet dates back to the Inquisition and the Knights Templar, who in the 12th century were tortured for allegedly confessing to worshiping a pagan idol called Baphomet.
Some historians believe that "Baphomet" was simply a derivation of the name "Muhammad", the founding prophet of Islam.
But over the years the mystery and speculation surrounding the Templars has increased, as have interpretations of the word and its meaning.
An elaborate interpretation even inspired the plot of the book The Da Vinci Code, by Dan Brown, in which the word Baphomet is decoded and translated as "Sofia" or wisdom.
Good and bad
Among so many interpretations, Baphomet means good and evil, light and darkness, heaven and earth, feminine and masculine. In addition to Satanism, the denomination is linked to magic, alchemy, witchcraft and esotericism. In Christianity, Baphomet is considered a demon, a diabolical creature, since it has horns, just like the devil (Satan), thus representing the forces of evil.
