Fortuna was the Roman goddess of chance, luck (good or bad), destiny and hope. She corresponds to the Greek deity Tyche. She was represented carrying a cornucopia and a helm, which symbolized the distribution of goods and the coordination of men's lives, and was generally blind or with her eyes covered (like the modern image of justice), as she distributed her designs randomly.

Fortuna was considered the daughter of Jupiter. Rome dedicated the 11th of June to her, and on the 24th of the same month a festival was held in her honor, Fors Fortuna. [1] [2] Her cult was introduced by Servius Tullius, and she had several temples in Rome.

Possibly the cult of Fortuna predates the founding of Rome, although the Romans attributed the introduction of this cult to Servius Tullius, king who dedicated at least twenty-six temples (Fanum Fortunae) to her in the capital, each with a different epiclesis. Fortuna was a goddess with a double but always positive character. Her counterpart in Greek mythology is the goddess Tyche.
