The tradition comes from the ancient Irish legend of "Jack O'Lantern." According to the story, a man named Jack tricked the devil and, when he died, could not enter either heaven or hell. He was condemned to wander through darkness, carrying only a burning coal inside a hollowed-out turnip to light his way.
When the Irish emigrated to the United States, they discovered that pumpkins—larger and easier to carve—were ideal for representing Jack's lantern.
🔸 Symbolism:
Protection: Jack-o'-lanterns are believed to ward off evil spirits and guide good souls.
A light against darkness: They symbolize hope and the light that conquers fear and death.
Harvest and abundance: The pumpkin is also a symbol of autumn and the harvest, celebrating abundance and the cycle of nature.
