Jesus the Nazarene Carrying the Cross – 15 cm

The long shaft of the cross runs diagonally from Jesus’ shoulder to one end of the rectangular base. Three gold-coloured rays rise above the crown of thorns. Raised sprigs and leaves on the cuffs and hem of the robe resemble embroidery. The scene recalls the second of the traditional Stations of the Cross, when Jesus takes up his cross.

Jesus was known as ‘the Nazarene’ because he grew up in Nazareth, a town in Galilee. Christians recognise him as the Son of God. The Gospels tell of his care for the sick and his teaching that we should love God and our neighbour.

The statue depicts a scene from the Passion of Christ. Condemned in Jerusalem, Jesus sets out for Calvary, where he will be crucified. His head is bowed, and both hands hold the dark cross against his shoulder. The pose recalls the second of the traditional Stations of the Cross, when Jesus takes up his cross.

The soldiers crowned Jesus with thorns to mock him as a king. The three golden rays rising above the crown are a sign of Christ’s divinity in Spanish religious art. Raised sprigs and leaves on the cuffs and hem of his blue-violet robe resemble embroidery. At 15 cm tall, this hand-painted polyester resin statue fits on a small home altar as a focus for prayer during Holy Week.
