A long golden rosary hangs from Mary’s joined hands. Its small cross rests against her cream tunic. Her face and mantle share the same soft shade, and the broad folds of her robes reach down to the gold-coloured base.
In 1917, three shepherd children, Lúcia, Francisco and Jacinta, described seeing Mary, the mother of Jesus, at the Cova da Iria in Portugal. Catholics honour her as Our Lady of Fatima in memory of these apparitions. Lúcia later wrote that Mary asked the children to pray the Rosary every day for peace. The three golden doves at her feet bring that prayer to mind.
In Catholic tradition, the crown is a sign of Mary’s queenship. On 13 May 1946, the statue venerated in Fatima’s Chapel of the Apparitions received a crown donated by a group of Portuguese women. This 20 cm figure can serve as a focus for prayer at home or as a keepsake of a pilgrimage to Fatima.
