Seated at the foot of the cross, Mary bends her face towards her Son’s. Jesus rests across her blue-green mantle, one arm hanging by his side. Three mourners stand close to Mary. The woman on the right, dressed in ochre, crosses her hands over her chest.
The white cloth draped over the cross recalls a detail from the Gospel of Mark (15:42–46). As evening fell, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for Jesus’ body. Joseph took him down from the cross, wrapped him in linen and laid him in a tomb cut into the rock.
In Catholic tradition, the thirteenth Station of the Cross recalls this moment. The image of Mary holding her Son after his death is known in Christian art as the Pietà. Small enough for a home altar, this sculpture can accompany a reading of Mark’s account on Good Friday.
