Mary Magdalene kneels in an ochre robe, her head bowed as she embraces Jesus’ feet. To the left of the cross, the Virgin Mary holds one hand to her chest. A white veil falls over her blue-green mantle. On the right, Mary of Clopas looks up at Christ, her hands joined in prayer against her rose-coloured robe.
John’s Gospel names these women among those who stayed beside Jesus at Calvary. Their gestures in the sculpture invite reflection on what it means to stay with someone who is suffering. In the same Gospel, it is Mary Magdalene who tells the disciples on Easter morning that she has seen the risen Christ.
Christ’s golden halo stands out against the dark cross, which has a wood-grain texture. All four figures share a rock-textured base. The sculpture can be placed on a small home altar to accompany a reading of the Passion during Holy Week.
