Oxalá is one of the most important orixás of the Afro-Brazilian religions, Candomblé and Umbanda. It is an androgynous divine entity, which represents the energies of nature's creation and personifies the sky.

The cult of Oxalá usually takes place on Fridays, its color is white. In religious syncretism, in association with Catholic devotion, he is seen as Jesus Christ and celebrated as Nosso Senhor do Bonfim, an important festival of religious tradition in Bahia.

According to belief, the functions of creation and reproduction are attributed to the orixá. This is the meaning of the word in the poem "Meu Pai Oxalá" by Vinícius de Moraes, which gave rise to the song in partnership with Toquinho.

Yoruba mythology tells that Olódùmarè (also called Olorum - God) gave Oxalá the mission to create the universe. I hope he was the first orixá and is the creator of everything, including human beings (who were created from clay).

Oxalá's wife is Iemanjá, together they had the other orixás. From this marriage, the horizon line was also born, separating the sky and the sea.

Oxalá is called the father of all. He is the deity of reason and wisdom. For practitioners of African matrix religions, he is especially called by the sick, as he is the orixá who takes care of both physical and mental health.
