The grey rocks at the foot of the cross evoke Golgotha, also known as Calvary, where Jesus was crucified. Grooves in the brown cross trace the grain of wood. Christ is shown with his head bowed, his feet crossed and a white cloth knotted at his waist.
The small plaque above Christ’s head bears the letters INRI. They stand for the Latin Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, meaning ‘Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews’. John’s Gospel tells how Pilate had the inscription placed on the cross, where it could be read in Hebrew, Latin and Greek (John 19:19–20).
On Good Friday, Catholics venerate the cross as they remember Christ’s death and the love with which he gave his life. The crucifix stands on its own on a table or home altar, where it can be used for quiet prayer or a reading of the Passion.
